PowerPoint 2002 from A to Z

Author: Stephen L. Nelson
Average review score:

Professional Certification Mag says "Indispensable!"
Perhaps the most handy reference collection we have seen come through our ProCert Labs, Stephen L. Nelson's From A To Z collection of quick reference guides really hits the spot. If you are using a Microsoft Office product (and if you are not: its time you bought yourself a computer), this handy reference guide will prove indispensable.

Stephen L. Nelson has been writing quick reference guides for some time now, and it shows in this series. Organized alphabetically, each guide excludes an index because, after all, it is one. The navigation is easy and gets right to the point. I looked up "Selecting Text" and learned that there are six different ways to do so. I discovered each of the six ways in less than half a page; a testament to the concise and straightforward instruction in store for every reader.

And don't let me fool you; the information available in each guide addresses the complex as well as the mundane. You will find quick reference tidbits on everything from Autoformatting (a bane to every Word user) to managing Text Formulas in Excel (which most of us would use if we knew they existed.)

For you Access jockeys, having the Access 2002 From A To Z quick reference at hand will make Applying Filters as easy as cooking with Ron Popeil. The finer points of PowerPoint are described in understandable detail, and if you are looking to quell your questions about Outlook, you will find them the fastest in this quick reference.

Bonus Situation: MOUS. Aside from being a valuable desktop reference, each quick reference guide includes information about passing the Microsoft Office User Specialist exam, and promises that the guide includes all the information you will need to pass the test. Our quick review confirmed this, making these books an excellent choice for those of you who are working toward MOUS certification.

The current series of quick reference guides includes:

Word 2002 From A To Z
Excel 2002 From A To Z
PowerPoint 2002 From A To Z
Access 2002 From A To Z
Outlook 2002 From A To Z
Windows 2002 From A To Z
Each quick reference is about 200 pages, with the exception of the Windows XP quick reference, which tops out at 250. Under twelve bucks apiece, you can't miss with any one of the From A To Z quick references from Redmond Technologies Press. Each book individually provides excellent coverage of every function of its technology, and the entire collection represents a comprehensive must have for anyone who relies on the MS Office suite for advanced productivity.

The Practice Of The Presence Of God and The Way Of Perfection (Nelson's Royal Classic)
Published in Hardcover by Nelson Reference (24 August, 1999)
Author: Teresa of Avila
Average review score:

WONDERFULL
I'm not given to gushing, but i must do so for the Practice of the Presence of God. Lawrence is simple and straight forward about seeking an awareness of God's presence. Even more practical than St. Teresa's writings (which is saying a lot), Lawrence explains that "pleasures" or "spiritual consolations" (to use Teresa's term) are all well and good, but that these are not the REASON for seeking the presence. Rather the awareness of the presence IS one's reward. It is not to make you a better person or more just, etc. It simply is to give you an awareness of God, which nothing can then take away from you.

Excellent read!!

Average review score:

The Pressure is Off
Jennifer's book teaches the purpose of prayer, the process of prayer, and the author of prayer. It shows you how to let God author your prayers and how to see His answers even when they are not what you are expecting. She is the best at using illustrations to make the complex and confusing, simple and easy to understand. After reading this book you will be released from the pressure to pray exactly the right thing in exactly the right way in order to see God work.

Precursors of Nelson: British Admirals of the Eighteeth Century
Published in Hardcover by Stackpole Books (January, 2001)
Authors: Peter LA Fevre, Richard Harding, Peter Lefevre, and Joseph K. Lange
Average review score:

Everything you need to know to photograph this area
This book is the third in the author's arsenal, and it is just as useful as the other two. The author is a wonderful photographer, just the images in the book would be worth the price, but the reader gets a lot more:
Detailed descriptions of where to go for the best shots, and the best times to go there. For some of the areas, you get a mile-by-mile log, and even some compositional suggestions. Even if one has been to these places previously, this book contains extremely valuable information for the serious photographer.

Predators at Risk in the Pacific Northwest
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (15 October, 2000)
Author: Dan A. Nelson
Average review score:

Wonderful and insightful!
This little book came to my attention as I was perusing the new books in the university library where I work. I have been reading more and more the books on wild animals in our collection. Most are older but still very interesting. Little by little the myths perpetrated by who knows who are being replaced in my mind with actual research being done on predators and prey. This book brought me up to date on the animals of today and in my area! The Pacific Northwest!

The author shows much enthusiasm for his subjects: cougars, lynx, wolves, coyotes, black and grizzly bears. He shows with a methodical logic that everything has a place in the ecosystem. He doesn't excuse the animals - he helps to explain them! He makes me proud once again to be a member of the two legged species known as man!

He has a wonderful sense of adventure and great advise on how to coexist with the wildlife that I am more and more giving respect and gratitude for the beauty they give to our world! I probably will buy a copy of this book even though our library has a copy - for all the information that it has inside the 134 pages! Great book! It was a joy to read!

Preventive Stress Management in Organizations
Published in Hardcover by American Psychological Association (APA) (June, 1997)
Authors: James Campbell Quick, Debra L. Nelson, Joseph J., Jr Hurrell, Jonathan D. Quick M. D., and Debra L. Nelson Ph. D.
Average review score:

An excellent resource!
This book is an excellent resource for both the practitioner and the researcher with an interest in occupational stress. As a stress researcher, I have referred to this book many times and my questions are almost always answered. In addition, it has an unusally extensive reference listing that covers virtually the entire spectrum of academic literature in the field of occupational stress. This book adds real value.

Probability, Stochastic Processes, and Queuing Theory: The Mathematics of Computer Performance Modelling
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (May, 1995)
Author: Randolph Nelson
Average review score:

Comprehensive and systematic.
This book is suitable for my graduate studies on computer performance. The author directs us from combinatorics, distribution theory, queue theory to queueing networks in a systematic way. I have read the book at ease for its stepwise elaboration of concepts. However, I have also read with hardship as it requires the readers to possess a good command of mathematics, both pure and applied, in order to go through the book.

For a mathematics graduate studying computer networks, I recommend this book. A novice or a mediocrity should pay more patience to read if not yet at a loss.

This book has aroused my interest and eagerness to know more about computer performance from the viewpoint of queueing and networking. In a word, I enjoy reading this book.

Promoting Family Wellness and Preventing Child Maltreatment: Fundamentals for Thinking and Action
Published in Paperback by Univ of Toronto Pr (January, 2002)
Authors: Isaac Prilleltensky, Geoffrey Nelson, and Leslea Peirson
Average review score:

A must read on child welfare
In my opinion this book is a model of its kind and easily the most important book in child welfare in the last ten years. These scholars, advocates, and practitioners set out a systematic framework within which to understand, develop, and implement systems and programs that will effectively engage the issues that prevent family wellness and contribute to child maltreatment. We have known for years that current reactive programming can do little to help families and children after major damage has been done, that this programming is escalating costs exponentially, and that existing fragmented systems and programs are unable to cope with the increasing complexity of problems. To actually resolve the problems of child maltreatment, the bulk of services have to be reorganized around the prevention end of the spectrum. We also know that the problems manifested in child welfare cannot be addressed solely through a focus on the family and that an ecological approach to thinking and action is essential. This book describes what it would take to actually make the transition to a prevention-focused and ecologically based system of services for families and children. It is a thorough compilation of policy-relevant knowledge on the determinants of family wellness and child maltreatment.

Policy experts within and outside government share total dependence on those who wield power, specifically politicians and ultimately citizens. In an age in which political leaders strive for ideological purity over pragmatism, it may seem that any policy advice from policy experts is entirely pointless. These authors, however, offer a practical, value and evidence-based foundation for a policy agenda within which to begin a substantive dialogue among major participants - families, politicians, professionals and government policy analysts - to address the preventable tragedy of child maltreatment. In short, the book was written for those people who are seriously searching for a means to promote family wellness and prevent child maltreatment.
